Apple Is Changing App Tracking Transparency in the EU
Following an investigation from the German anti-trust organization known as the FCO (Federal Cartel Office), Apple is changing the way it handles personal data and tracking on the App Store. If you’ve used the App Store at all in the last few years, you’ll be familiar with the pop-up Apple refers to as App Tracking Transparency (ATT). Apple requires third-party developers to disclose whether they collect personal data from the users of their app. If they do, you’ll see the ATT pop-up soon after you launch the app for the first time—it explains that the app wants to track your activity, what the developers might use that data for, and then prompts you to choose to “Allow” the tracking or “Ask App Not To Track.”
According to the FCO, it’s fine that Apple gives users the option to opt out of data collection, but they need to make data collection sound less scary. To comply with the FCO’s “fairer” tracking transparency rules, Apple will make several changes to the current ATT pop-up. This includes changing a graphic color from orange to blue, allowing developers to add additional language explaining why they want to track a user, and changing the default prompt language to remove the word “track” altogether. All the changes seem to be aimed at making third-party data collection from developers seem less intimidating to iPhone users.
Let Us Help You Update Your OS Securely
Keeping your software up to date doesn’t just get you access to new features, it keeps your device safe. In the latest software update for iPhone users, Apple fixed over 20 security issues. This is why it’s important to keep your devices up to date when you can—if your machine is running on years old software, there’s no telling what vital security patches you may be missing out on and what kind of cyberattacks your device is vulnerable to.
The security patches you get from new software is important, but if you’re not careful, updating your device can cause you to lose access to programs and apps you rely on that aren’t compatible with the latest OS. If you or your team rely on an Apple device in the office, make sure you give us a call before installing a new update. We can take a look at your system and help you install the most secure OS that will protect your data without interrupting your work.
