Tariffs May Cause Apple Product Shortage
Apple Supplier Pegatron has warned we may be seeing “empty shelves” at Apple Stores within the next two months. With the changing tariff policies, Pegatron is one of many manufacturers warning their US customers worried about a possible product shortage on the horizon.
As of this article from MacRumors, Pegatron chairman T.H. Tung says the company’s long-term plans remain unchanged despite the tariff changes. Pegatron claimed most US-importers are hesitant to ramp up shipments right now despite the current tariff pause, since they’re hopeful the 10% levy against imported goods may be repealed altogether.
Siri and the Security Risks of AI
In March Apple announced Siri’s AI upgrade, which was slated for iOS 18.4, would be pushed back. Apple hasn’t shared the reason for the delay, but according to a report from 9to5Mac, one major factor may be security. Simon Willison, creator of data analysis tool Datasette, says integrating Siri with a Large Language Model like ChatGPT could be a huge safety risk. Willison says a LLM would leave Siri vulnerable to “injection attacks,” giving hackers the opportunity “subvert those tools and use them to damage or exfiltrate a user’s data.”
According to recent reports, progress on the new features is going well and the new Siri is on track for an iOS 19 release. Apple is sure to address any safety concerns before rolling out Siri’s AI makeover, but this is a good reminder of the risks other AI tools can and do pose.
