Ring Doorbells Criticized for Surveillance Feature
Some have labeled Amazon’s Ring video doorbells as ‘dystopian’ after they announced new surveillance features for the devices in February. The feature, Ring Search Party, was initially marketed as a way to locate lost pets. But with Search Party’s launch coming so soon after Ring added facial recognition capabilities and announced a (now abandoned) partnership with the police, it’s obvious why some customers are on edge. Add on a leaked email where Ring founder Jamie Siminoff excitedly boasted Search Party’s potential to “zero out crime in neighborhoods,” and it’s obvious Amazon is interested in surveilling more than just lost puppies.
