Massive Database of Stolen Passwords Discovered

A massive database of over 184 million stolen passwords and login credentials was recently discovered on an unprotected web server.  Despite containing over 47 GB of raw data, the database was not password protected or encrypted. Along with putting millions of Apple, Google, Facebook, and PayPal accounts at risk, the publicly exposed database includes credentials for various government portals and financial institutions.

Jeremiah Fowler, the security researcher who discovered the database, was unable to confirm who the server belonged to. Fowler reported the database to the web hosting company, who restricted access to it but refused to share any details about the owner of the account.

If you have an account with any of the services in this database, we encourage you to change your password immediately and set up 2 factor-authentication for additional security. 9to5 Mac lists some of the sites known to be compromised in their article about Fowler’s discovery.

Be Careful Downloading Beta Software

With Apple’s yearly WWDC event having kicked off on June 9th, many users are eager to try out the latest updates and innovations Apple has to offer. However, we caution our clients against installing macOS, iOS, tvOS, or iPadOS beta releases on primary production devices. Beta software refers to pre-release versions of software that are still undergoing testing and may contain bugs or instability. It's essential to use test devices exclusively for beta software testing to avoid any negative impact on your company’s daily operations.
