New Regulations for Data Brokers
Last December, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposed new legislation to crack down on the sale of your personal data. After a major data broker suffered a critical security breach in August of 2024, 2.7 billion records including sensitive information on citizens in the UK, US, and Canada were leaked. With rising concern about what might happen if another data leak were to occur, the CFPB wants to subject data brokers to the same strict regulations as credit agencies. This means data brokers—who often handle highly sensitive information including addresses and social security numbers—would no longer be able to sell your data without a “legitimate reason.”
