Protecting Yourself Against AI Phishing Scams
Scammers using AI isn’t a new phenomenon—in 2019, a UK based energy firm made headlines after an AI generated voice mimicking a top executive tricked one employee into transferring scammers over $240,000. With AI tools like deepfake generators and voice changers becoming increasingly common, it’s not surprising more cybercriminals are taking advantage of the technology.
What can you do to protect your company? As with all phishing scams, knowledge and caution are your best defense. If you suspect what you’re seeing or hearing isn’t 100% real, take a closer look. Inconsistent shadows, unnatural or robotic tone, and overly formal phrasing can be signs of AI usage. When in doubt, remember these three words: Stop. Think. Verify. Avoid giving any sensitive information away to a phone number or email address you don’t recognize, no matter who the person on the other end claims to be. And if you suspect you’ve fallen victim to a phishing attack, AI or otherwise, call us as soon as possible.
